We establish in a model of monopolistic competition that the effects of a pollution abatement effort on the equilibrium value of strategic variables depend on how this effort would modify the degree of economies of scale. The effects of market size, on the other hand, depend entirely on the elasticity of demand for every variety. Under autarky however, the determination of the optimal level of pollution abatement effort is shown to be independent of the market size provided that the elasticity of demand for varieties is constant. This result would then have an important implication when trade opening of differentiated products is considered. Coun­tries which have adopted the optimal environmental policy before trade need not to modify them and therefore, in this case, no international policy coordination will be necessary. This policy coordination, in contrast, is an essential feature for trade opening when the price elasticity of demand for varieties is variable.
