Abstract

[eng] This article deals with two important monetary controversies in England at the end of the seventeenth century, the debate on the level of interest and the problem of recoinage. It elaborates upon Locke's position. We aim to show that Locke's argumentation cannot be interpreted as favourable to a nascent economic liberalism. In our opinion, Locke's economic writings can only be understood in the light of his political and social philosophy. The task of the government is to guarantee the stability of the social and political order by an appropriate economic policy.
