Abstract
[eng] Productivity accounts come to the historian's help. . The quantitative aspect of economic history is a field which has little been explored up to now, especially as regard the evolution of the different sectors. In this respect, productivity accounts, as they are considered here, provide the historian with a new instrument for research. They are more or less similar to simplified surplus accounts, which makes it possible to apply them to periods for which few statistical data are available. The statement of the method is followed by historical examples concerning two very different sectors: coal mining and wood industries. The periods studied are 1876-1896 and 1896-1913. These two sectors have been chosen on purpose: coal mining, being under state control, has been subjected to regular returns, whereas wood industries are very little known. The method which is proposed here still requires preliminary investigations, but it ensures the consistency of final results. An appendix gives some details on the accounting principles and the capital and depreciation valuation methods employee here.
