Abstract

[eng] Writers have often been inspired by country life. But the hierarchy according to which literary works are ranked by historians is not based on the same criteria as those used by literary critics. As important as Balzac's Paysans and Zola's La Terre, are second-rank novels by René Bazin and Ernest Pérochon. The historian can find there concrete data about weather, information about the techniques in use, remarks about social relations. Yet he must be careful about that kind of bias which is often caused by the quest for an artistical effect, and also pay attention to those ideological deviations which push the writer either to blacken or to embellish a crude reality.
