Abstract

[eng] Dairy cows involved in the specialized beef production scheme demand, just as much capital as cows involved in dairy production, for a much lower, and more fluctuating return. Stock represents 60 % of the total. The Capital/income ratio exceeds 10 for an arerage year. The capital involved does not depend on the length of the production cycle but on the intensification level (number of cattle heads / acres of grazing land), and on the technical level and on the date of the investment. The proportion of income immobilized remains high : from 1/3 to half of the income, according to the data of developing Charolais units. Taking into account the low level of cash available to met family needs a growing level of indebtment is inevitable. One can question the possibilities of success of the extensification process in marginal areas unless there is a major change in lowering structural charges as a whole.
