Abstract
[eng] Up rooting premiums and vineyard regression - This paper analyses the impact of incentives for up rooting vineyards in France during three periods 53-57, 76-79, 80-85. Uprooting rates vary according to periods and areas. These variations are not only related to the way in which premiums are allocated but depend mainly on the structural factors governing vineyard regression or inertia. Uprooting premiums account only for a limited part of vineyard regression and their effects on market equilibrium are compensated by other factors. Special analysis of the effects of premiums consequences in Languedoc show a recent increase in the uprooting rates following a phase of resistance in the plains where the vine is the only crop. But the consequences of this uprooting policy are diverse and the conditions of crop diversification heterogeneous according to the various type of farms. These results show that a study of the impact of an agricultural policy measure must be based on the analysis of farm behaviour and of the constraints governing them.
