Abstract

. Classification JEL : F33, F36, N24 [eng] The European monetary union : from Bretton Woods to present day . The creation of the single currency in January 1999 represented a major step forward in European integration. In just 50 years, the countries comprising Europe democratically elected to advance from a Customs Union to the adoption of a single currency, which in itself was the crowning achievement of the European Single Market. This paper presents the political, economic and monetary preparations leading up to the creation of the single currency. It then takes stock of the new currency’s first years, from the standpoint of its main successes and benefits. Lastly, it expands on the challenges still to be met in order to take full advantage of the single currency. . JEL classification : F33, F36, N24
