Abstract

. Cooperative sector banks have been generally perceived as one of the three pillars of German (universal) banking. Over the last decade, however, a debate about the future of cooperative sector banks has developed. Coincidentally, cooperative banks’ traditional on-balance sheet activities became, on net, less profitable. In this paper, the author analyses the historical background of cooperative banks in Germany and at the same time describe their distinctive traits. Then their current economic situation is outlined, admittedly in a broad-brush way. Subsequently, against the background of an erosion of market shares as well as pressures on margins, the emerging policy response - and an alternative suggested - is summarised. By way of wrapping up, the final part concludes on some thoughts on the prospects of regionally focused banks. . JEL classifications : G21, G3, L2
