Abstract

[eng] Financial centres and central banks . Globalisation, technological evolutions and the euro have affected dramatically the European financial markets. The competition is more intense, but the role of financial markets remains the same. Central banks still have to maintain financial stability, which benefits to all the actors. . JEL Classification : E58 [fre] Cet article revient sur les évolutions récentes qui ont affecté les places financières. Trois phénomènes majeurs ont remis en cause les conditions de leur fonctionnement : globalisation, révolutions technologiques et mise en place de la monnaie unique. L’ouverture accrue des marchés s’est aussi traduite par un accroissement de la concurrence. Ce nouvel environnement ne remet néanmoins pas en cause le rôle des places financières au sein des économies. Dans ce contexte, le rôle des banques centrales reste un élément important : elles sont les garants de la stabilité financière dont l’influence bénéficie à toutes les composantes. Elles participent activement à la surveillance prudentielle, à la définition de règles communes, et sont un point de passage obligé pour les systèmes de paiement. . Classification JEL : E58
