Abstract
[eng] Strategic drivers and shifts in global investment banking. This article deals with the exposed ambition of banking institutions over the last ten years to develop global investment banking activities. The industry experienced however concentration and over capacity, leading to the decrease of commissions and many restructurations allowed, among other points, by the blurring of distinctions between commercial banks, investment banks and securities houses. Growing competition in EMU reveals different strategies from European banks, that is to say resolving over capacity problems, absorbing new opportunities, establishing oligopoly returns, establishing long term relationships with clients and adapting to growth uncertainty in industry. Concluding section deals with the effects of EMU on banking sector, and the losers and the winners inside this sector. [fre] Cet article traite de la volonté affichée au cours de ces dix dernières années par les principales institutions bancaires de la planète de développer des activités de banques d’affaires à l’échelle mondiale. Cette industrie a de fait connu des phénomènes de concentration et de surcapacité, se traduisant notamment par une diminution des commissions et par de nombreuses restructurations permises entre autres par la disparition des distinctions réglementaires entre banques commerciales, banques d’affaires et maisons de titres. La concurrence accrue en Europe révèle plusieurs stratégies de la part des banques, telles que la résolution des problèmes de surcapacité, le recentrage sur la profitabilité, les moyens de l’absorption des nouvelles opportunités, la mise en oeuvre de rendements d’oligopole, l’établissement de relations de long terme avec la clientèle et l’adaptation aux aléas de la croissance dans l’industrie. La conclusion présente les effets de la construction européenne sur le secteur bancaire, ainsi que les gagnants et les perdants au sein de ce secteur.
