Abstract
[eng] The particular dynamism shown by the SMEs sector in the last two decades has been abated somewhat by the 1991-93 recession. In the long term the presence of an enduring favorable SMEs development climate, through such characteristics as market fragmentations, need for more convivial working milieus, limits to scale economies as well as government decentralization tendencies, will not be sufficient to support this dynamism if SMEs entrepreneurs do not keep up their modernization effort in technoloqv renewal. A survey conducted in SMEs manufacturing sectors of Quebec has shown that these firms are presently active in adopting new technologies, whether generic new high technologies as CAD and Robotics, or various new technologies specific to their sector. These adoptions are part of firm-wide innovation sustained effort in decreasing product cost and increasing product quality and diversity. A catch up phase has been realized and if the actual adoption rates are kept up, it is expected that they will gain a global competitive status, notably through new linkages with large firms.
