Abstract
[eng] This study reports on an investigation of modes of innovation in 43 firms in six industrial sectors. Modes of innovations were found to be highly sector specific. In fact, most firms innovate in predictable fashions, in conformity with the logic of innovation in their industry. A substantial minority of firms adopt maverick behaviors, similar to modes of innovation which prevail in other industries.. An empirical taxonomy of modes of innovation cutting across industry lines is presented. Four configurations emerged from the data analysis : (i) science-based product innovations ; (ii) entrepreneurial fast-track global cost leaders ; (iv) lethargie reliance on information and process technology.
