Abstract

[eng] How do artisans face up or endure the contemporary turmoil ? Do certain artisanal activities survive better than others ? This line of questioning is at the hub of our study, which is based on the comparative analysis of 3 000 enterprises between 1973 and 1983.. Although the scope of the activities and the environmental pressures have changed, crafstmanship is no more exploding today than it was disappearing ten years ago. Half of the work force has turned over however, the other half has maintained its independence. Their dynamism is fueled first and foremost on economical conditions such as choice of an adapted niche activity, technical or managerial skills, etc. This dynamism also finds its motivation without a doubt through particular psychological inclinations : the artisans' personality accomodates better in their daily economical exchanges the « interpersonal bargaining » rather than the relative protection of a salaried status and/or submission to institutionalized pricing.
