Abstract

While the British civil engineering industry retained its position as world leader, it came under threat from completion, not only from French, German and Belgian firms, but even from Swiss, Scandinavians and Italians. Germany and Belgium, no less than France or the United Kingdom, the emergence of powerful firms, as instanced by Philipp Holzmann (Germany) and Ackermans & Haaren (Belgium).
