Abstract

[eng] Sociability : a Cultural Practice - The French have non-professional conversations with seventeen different people in a week. Three quarters of these people are, in almost equal proportions, relatives, colleagues and friends, the rest being divided into neighbours, associations, shopkeepers and acquaintances. It can be noted that friends are more present for the young, colleagues for the middle-aged, and relatives for the old. Behaviours regarding sociability bear the mark of the traditional role division between the sexes : first, women socialize with those who are close to them - relatives, shopkeepers and neighbours. In the lower classes, however, the women who have a professional activity have sensibly more varied social contacts. . Apart from family relations, the various components in sociability tend to combine : the third of personal conversations between friends or colleagues are concentrated on a tenth of the job-holders. Sociability, which is more connected to the level of education than to the wealth, presents all the features of a cultural practice.
