Abstract

[eng] Household income by social category in 1979 - Among incomes from professional activity, of which three-quarters consists of salaries, disparities according to social category are significant. Income from inheritance represents 12% of available income and reinforces these gaps still more. On the other hand, social benefits and, particularly, retirement pensions lessen the differences. Direct taxation, finally, deducts an average of 8 % from total income, but, in so doing, considerably reduces the disparities among categories. From 1970 to 1979, disparities were lessened slightly between extreme categories, salaried farmers and the self-employed. In these years, the relation between their available income went from 3.4 to 2.8. The proportion of social transfers increased, going from 23 % to 29 % of income before taxes. This growth is explained essentially by the increase of retirement pensions. Where the head of the household was working, laborers' income increased more than the average. This resulted both from continued growth of their salaries and from the significant social benefits that they received.
