Abstract

[eng] Households Drive More, Cars Run Less -The number of kilometres run by the French increased in about 40 % in the course of the past eight years. Households who own a car run it on an average of 16 000 kilometres a year. But multiplicity of equipment advances most speedily : more and more households make use of two motor-cars, so that each one runs less : an average of 12 600 kilometres against 13 500 eight years ago. Rises in motor-fuel price, purchase of a second car on behalf of a population who drives less, shifting of cars which eat up kilometres against more temperate household goods seem to be the main components of this middle-term evolution.
