Abstract

[eng] Land - National holdings in unconstructed land, evaluated in market prices, were 823 billion current francs in 1 976. More than three fourths of this belonged to households, one fifth to corporations (including the Office National des Forêts), and the remaining 2 % to various government departments and agencies. The landholdings of households fall into three major groups : owner operated farm holdings (42.2 % in 1976), leased farm holdings (37.0 %), and lastly other holdings (20 %) consisting of forests and construction lots. Three social categories owned 89.2 % of these holdings : farmers (45.8 %), the retired (34.0 %), and the self-employed and liberal professions (9.4 %). Finally, the owners who lease farmland are, on the average, older than those operating self-own ed land.
