Abstract

[eng] Prices in Major French Cities - In 1977 the INSEE carried out a survey which made it possible to determine the price index of goods and services (excluding rents) consumed by households in 21 urban centers throughout France. Paris and Reims emerged as the most expensive areas and Le Mans as the least expensive. Overall, only a 6.5 % difference separates the prices of the former from the latter. A more detailed analysis shows, however, that in the area of food products Ajaccio-Bastia, Paris, and Clermont-Ferrand are particularly expensive, while the West and South West are relatively cheap. In the clothing sector, Paris again proves to have the highest prices, while Marseille has the lowest. Manufactured goods, however, turn out to be most costly in Reims and least expensive in Toulouse. Lastly, the difference in the cost of services between Reims (the highest) and Le Mans (the lowest) is considerable.
