Abstract

[eng] At the present time, sight deposits in France represent two thirds of liquid assets, compared with one half only in 1950 and about one third in 1938. . These sight deposits come largely from households. What are the characteristics of the holders of current accounts ? . A sample survey made in 1967 (8,000 households) throws light on them. It is found, in particular, that: — the current account is an attribute of the head of household;. — the proportion of holders rises rapidly with rising income, and the customers are relatively young;. — bank accounts and post office accounts are often held concurrently. While in well-to-do circles the two types of account are held together, agricultural circles and independent professions prefer bank accounts; . — the influence of a Post Office clientele explains a close correlation between the holding of a Savings Book and a Post Office Cheque Account; . — the Post Office Cheque account is mainly a method of collecting income and paying current or periodic expenditure rather than an instrument for establishing reserve funds. For this purpose there is a marked preference for a bank account or Savings Book.
