Abstract
[eng] Congestion : A Key Variable in Recreation-Site Choice Models. . The travel-cost method iswidely used to estimate the value of recreational sites and simulate the impact of public policies on welfare. Congestion is often excluded from the explanatory variables generally used in these analyses, thus leading to omission bias. Admittedly, introducing congestion in a model poses major econometric problems, because the variable is determined by a sorting Nash equilibrium and is potentially correlatedwith themodel’s error term. Severalmethods have recently been proposed to address these difficulties. We describe and illustrate the methods in a nested model of recreational choice. The treatment of congestion has a significant influence on our results.
