La rápida expansión de los supermercados en América Latina: desafíos y oportunidades para el desarrollo

Abstract

During the nineties, supermarkets stopped being a niche for rich consumers in Latin America, and their participation in the retail sector went from an average of around 10% to 20% in 1990 to between 50% and 60% in the year 2000. These results are the outcome of nine studies -presented in the lnternational Workshop "Concentración en los segmentos de procesamiento y de comercio minorista del sistema agroalimentario en América Latina y sus efectos en la pobreza rural", that took place in Santiago, Chile, in November of the year 2000- and that deal with issues such as the impact of the supermarkets on the dairy sector, or of the effect of fast-food chains on fruits and vegetables producers, or that put the supermarkets expansion on a regional perspective, MERCOSUR and NAFTA, which results we try to summarize in this paper.
