Empresas públicas en América Latina: ¿una nueva visión?

Abstract

De las diez principales empresas fuera de los Estados Unidos en 198 1, cinco fueron empresas públicas, y dos de éstas fueron empresas públicas de Latinoamérica (Fortune, 22 de agosto de 1982). Basándose en. la sabiduría popular, generalmente aceptada, se esperaría que una clasificación de las diez principales empresas por tasas de retorno al capital de los accionistas daría una lista con esas cinco empresas .públicas ocupando los últimos cinco lugares. Sin embargo, ocurrió casi lo opuesto. Las tres primeras posiciones fueron ocu- padas por empresas públicas que superaron a cualquiera de las compañías privadas. Ademas, las tasas de retorno de las tres primeras varió de 17So/o a 30.7010, y ninguna de las cinco primeras empresas públicas (originalmente clasificadas en términos de ventas, lo cual debe tenerse presente) tuvo una tasa de retorno sobre el capital menor al 12o/o. Una de las empresas latinoa- mericanas ocupó el segundo lugar en la clasificación por tasas de retorno, y la otra estaba en el quinto lugar.
