A Study of Union Ability to Secure the First Contract in Foreign-Owned Firms in the USA

Abstract

The ability of American labor unions to obtain collective bargaining contracts in foreign-owned firms after winning the right to represent the workers is examined. Elections held and agreements reached during the period 1980-1988 in firms from sixteen different countries indicate that a union is likely to secure the first contract in only about half the cases, and even fewer in German- and Japanese-owned firms.© 1992 JIBS.
