Development Amid Deprivation: Learning in Preparation for Adult Life among Low-Income Households in Delhi

Abstract

Cet article donne un compte rendu ethnographique du passage de l′enfance à l′âge adulte et des opportunités d′apprentissage associées à l′enfance pour les ménages à bas revenus vivant à Delhi. Ce compte rendu est formulé dans le cadre d′une théorie développementale du parcours de vie qui montre comment les rôles des filles et des fils constituent des apprentissages à travers lesquels les enfants acquièrent des compétences les aidant à effectuer cette transition et honorer leurs responsabilités à l′âge adulte. Ces transitions sont sexuées dans la mesure où les opportunités d′apprentissage sont insérées non pas tant dans le système formel d′éducation que dans la vie familiale pour les filles et professionnelle pour les garçons. Bien que cette communauté connaisse une augmentation du taux de scolarisation, cette dernière reste menacée par les constantes difficultés économiques qui caractérisent la vie quotidienne et contribuent à la transmission de la pauvreté et des inégalités de génération en génération.
