Abstract

Labour costs cover all aspects of costsincurred by employers when employingworkers. These include wages andsalaries, National Insurance and socialcontributions, redundancy payments,benefi ts in kind, overheads and other nonwagecomponents.This article gives a brief overview of thestructure of labour costs and then focuseson earnings (the largest component oflabour costs). It shows how earnings inthe whole economy have changed overtime and also the earnings distribution byoccupation. The other topics of interestanalysed in the article are the genderpay gap both over time and by variouspersonal characteristics, as well asestimates of how many people are paidbelow the National Minimum Wage.
