Abstract

In the ideal ESP (English for Special Purposes) classroom, students should work together inorder to perform their tasks. However, they should also compete and work independently. Thepurpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of teamwork/cooperative learning inencouraging cooperation, competition and independent work and in developing teamwork andreading skills in the ESP classroom. Cooperative learning involves students actively, as itorganizes them into groups, giving them defined roles and a common group task. Cooperativeteaching techniques involve the students in class and help them to increase their knowledge. Thefirst section of this paper is an introduction to Cooperative learning, while the second one presentsits basic elements and activities. The last section focuses on a case study that highlights the positiveeffects of cooperative learning methods on English reading skills.
