The Prospects of the European Social Model – A Post-Crisis Approach

Abstract

Since the mid ‘80s Europe has tried to assert a single common social model with better welfare and social inclusion than its ultra-liberal competitor – the United States. The reality shows that many different social models coexist in Europe and they have been put to a tremendous test during the recent economic crisis. Some of them have bitterly failed this test and must undergo deep structural reforms. On the other hand, the recently exposed shortcomings of the neoliberal paradigm require a profound reconsideration of the role of the state as a regulator of imperfect markets. With its flaws revealed in the aftermath of the crisis, Europe has a unique opportunity to move forward in promoting a smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.
