Coronary heart disease versus BSE: Characterising official British expert advisory committees

Abstract

The BSE crisis has led scholars to put forward significant generalisations about UK expert committees concerning their selection, function, and nature of debate. This paper explores two expert committees, which advised the UK Government on policy towards diet and heart disease during the post-war period. However in this paper I show that the generalisations drawn from the BSE crisis do not fit the expert committees on diet and heart disease. This brings into question the scope of these generalisations. It would appear that the time honoured refrain of more research needed could not be closer to the truth.
