Faculty involvement in research in mass higher education: current practice and future perspectives in the Scandinavian countries

Abstract

To what extent should teaching staff in the new and enlarged system be involved in research? This is considered in relation to the expanding sector of mass higher education in the Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Norway and Sweden). The cost of higher education, and an increasingly stringent public purse, may imply that central government in the Scandinavian countries pay greater attention to the role of research in higher education in the near future. Emphasis on the quality of research, concentration of efforts and cost may imply a more critical eye on the research function. Copyright , Beech Tree Publishing.
