A taxonomy of national systems of innovation: R&D structure of OECD economies

Abstract

As technology becomes more globalised increasing attention has been paid to the concept of national systems of innovation (NSI). This paper presents a descriptive taxonomy of NSI as a quantitative base for future research. R&D structure in terms of the flow of R&D expenditure among major actors in 23 OECD countries is used to produce seven clusters of countries with different NSI characteristics. This can form the basis of a more extensive taxonomy including non-OECD economies. Copyright , Beech Tree Publishing.
