Abstract

An analysis of the private non-profit-making institutions within the network of the University of Coimbra on the basis of their respective R&D activities, allows us to gauge the intensity of the university-industry relationship of which these institutions are protagonists. Three groups of institutions have been identified: the first is strongly connected to the basic sciences (basic research), the second to the applied sciences (applied research and experimental development), and the third to the economic and social sciences (basic and applied research and especially the provision of consultative services). The applied science group shows the greatest volume of industrial contracts and projects. This article identifies the modalities of co-operation, the most common types and forms of knowledge/technology transfer and the main benefits of this co-operation for the university and for industry. It also analyses how these institutions are financed and managed. Copyright , Beech Tree Publishing.
