Relevance of research and technological activities for economic development in some less-favoured European countries

Abstract

Relatively large public investments are directed to the research and technological development infrastructures of the ‘less-favoured regions’ of the European Union. The effort was initially grounded theoretically on the linear model of interlinking science, technology and the economy, and emphasis was given to research infrastructures. The cases of Greece and Portugal show the difficulty of putting science and technology in direct support of economic development. High performances in publishing and in attracting competitive funding are not followed by corresponding increases in research-intensive private production or investments. For the ‘structural’ effort to have a permanent impact in closing the gaps, the establishment of complex techno-economic networks is required. Copyright , Beech Tree Publishing.
