Innovation and energy conservation: Electric motors in Brazil

Abstract

Drive systems represent a large part of electricity demand in Brazil and therefore high potential for energy conservation. The technology of electric motors and the structure of the industry is described, examining technological capabilities and strategies of Brazilian firms. The main incentives for, and obstacles to, innovation and conservation measures in the industry are assessed. The conclusion is that there is significant potential for electricity conservation in Brazil in the electric motors industry but government policies need to be devised to encourage the appropriate developments and increase the demand for high efficiency motors. These could include improving the user-producer link and the introduction of a price differential between HEMs and standard motors using tax incentives, rebates or establishing a minimum rate of efficiency.
