Knowledge transfer: the medium and the message

Abstract

Using the vocabulary of communication, the defining characteristics shaping the transfer of social scientific knowledge are discussed. Social science is mundane, contingent, reflexive, non-cumulative and non-appropriable. These qualities mean that knowledge transfer for social science takes place in the public world; takes a variety of trajectories connecting thought, research and action; must be interactive and continuous; requires sophisticated speakers and listeners; and must choose the appropriate media.
