Land ownership and farm unit: Contradictions and conflicts

Abstract

Legislation on land ownership and tenancy dates from before the start of the rapid development of agriculture. The tenure institutions, therefore, simultaneously have influenced the pattern of development and have been changing under its impact. The objective of this paper is to study these tensions between the institutional framework concerning the ownership and the use of land and the changes in the systems and structures of agricultural production. The analysis mainly concerns the French situation which presumably to a great extent also applies to the situation in other West European countries. There are three stages in the analysis: 1) The institutional base concerning legal rights on the land and its development until World War II; 2) The adjustments in France since the war in relation to the arising tensions concerning ownership and use of land; 3) The importance and the ambiguous status of small land ownership.
