Strategies to Reduce Surplus Production and Environmental Burden

Author

Listed:
  • Weinschenck, Gunter

Abstract

This paper discusses basically three strategies to reduce surplus production and environmental burden: the combination of a decrease of product prices, direct income payments in the form of withdrawal premiums, and administrative measures to observe ecological limits; the application of an "ecological package" that aims at a simultaneous reduction of surplus production and ecological burden; and special support of organic farming by deficiency payments. Different combinations of the basic strategies are shown in the conclusions. The paper is written in form of a dialogue to facilitate the discussion of pro and contra.
