An Evaluation of Alternative EC-Market Policies for Fruit and Vegetables

Author

Abstract

The actual EC market policy for fruit and vegetables is a cause of growing public concern, because quantities withdrawn from the market are often destroyed. A dynamic market simulation model was constructed and applied to evaluate the effects of alternative market policies. The considered policies include aggravated foreign trade regulation, production restrictions, processing subsidies, and an abolition or modification of the intervention system of fruit and vegetables. The simulation results suggest that the destruction of food can be avoided without causing an increase of public expenditures or a significant loss of producer incomes.
