The Brazilian automotive industry in the BRICs context: the case of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba

Abstract

The automotive industry has of late undergone significant shifts in terms of production patterns around the world. This considerable restructuring is seen in the declining market share of industrialized nations and the increasing share of developing countries, especially the so-called BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China). In Brazil, this process has been noticeable in particular from the second half of the 1990s. This paper analyses the position of Brazil within this global restructuring, in particular by examining the causes and consequences of automotive industry expansion in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba--the MRC, which is the third most important car production agglomeration in Brazil.
