Abstract

Lay Summary Many ecological and evolutionary factors may induce acoustic divergence between species. Using a wide data set on bats, we show that interspecific divergence in social calls are determined primarily by sociality, body size, and phylogenetic relationships. Just as sexual selection, sociality may serve as a powerful social pressure driving acoustic phenotype diversity.
