The American Farm Economic Association as Viewed by a Sample of Its Members

Abstract

This article summarizes portions of a mail survey conducted by the Extension Affairs Committee of the American Farm Economic Association during January and February 1964. A profile of the general characteristics and professional habits of AFEA members includes age, educational level, and membership and participation in professional associations with particular emphasis on the AFEA. Member reactions and suggestions for improvement of AFEA include (1) more concern with practical problems, and issues and proposals for action with less technical sophistication and mathematics in JFE articles; (2) more workshops; (3) expansion of the awards program; (4) more special sessions programmed for broad areas of interest; and (5) more informal seminars devoted to problems in research, teaching, extension, and industry at the annual meetings.
