Comment définir l'université du XXIe siècle?

Abstract

Le terme “université” est très ancien, pourtant, à l’aube du XXIe siècle, sa définition demeure extrêmement controversée. Les spécialistes pensent en général que la première université a vu le jour dès le Moyen-âge avec la création de l’Université de Paris et de celle de Bologne (au XIIe siècle environ). D’autres cependant affirment que l’université, selon la définition que l’on en donne, pourrait être apparue des siècles plus tôt (Neave, 1999 ; Welch et Denman, 1997 ; Patterson, 1997). Cet article a pour objet d’ébaucher une classification des universités pour le XXIe siècle, mettant l’accent sur le rôle que ces établissements jouent dans la diffusion et le progrès du savoir par l’enseignement et la recherche. S’appuyant sur de grands événements qui dans l’histoire ont donné naissance aux différentes formes d’universités, cet article cherche à déterminer si les universités sont faites pour répondre aux forces du marché ou bien pour déclencher le changement dans des sociétés de plus en plus basées sur le savoir.
