Das Strategische Management als Disziplin – Meilensteine und Perspektiven seiner Entwicklung

Abstract

A jubilee is a good time to take a longterm perspective. On this 70th anniversary of the business journal “Die Unternehmung” this will be done for the field of strategic management. Today strategic management is one of the core disciplines in a business education. Also there is almost none larger company which has not a strategy department. And many decision boards use the support of a strategy consultancy. In this article, written in an essay form, we try to provide a “big picture” how the evolution of strategy management happened over the last five centuries since its origins: How did the dominant paradigm developed? Which topics have been in the heart of the discussion? What was in the focus of the research efforts? We also take a critical view on the status quo of the discipline: How far do we have a secured state of knowledge to answer the core questions of the field? To what extent insights from the academia are used by the strategists? Finally we will speculate a bit about possible future developments.
