Abstract

Sociocratic and democratic organizations stand as real utopias, entrusting extensive decision-making and design competencies to all employees. Drawing from the findings of a qualitative explorative study involving 13 expert and employee interviews, this article delves into the inquiry of how the inherent tension between reality and utopia is resolved in practice. Employees partake in self-organization as a process of commoning to reflexively shape structures, rules, and processes to their needs. Consequently, the organization transforms into a commons, readily accessible to all employees, framing and underpinning their activities. The concept of real utopias underscores that, beyond progressive expectations, practical conditions and limitations must be reconciled as well.
