Abstract

Prisoner-of-war-camps often represent a kind of substitute home for prisoners once they live there for a long time. In his bestseller, Zeltbuch von Tumilad (1949), Erhart Kästner describes what the prisoners’ daily rituals were like from morning to the evening, and how the camp’s surroundings, particularly the Egyptian desert between Cairo and Suez in Wadi Tumilat, influenced their perception of nature and their souls. In his literary account of his experiences in the years 1945 to 1946 the author’s depictions of the desert are influenced by traditional perceptions of orientalism. His temporary living space becomes the soul-space of a hermit.
