One of the main tendencies in the development of tourism in worldwide importance is alternative tourism, also named rural, agrarian, green, ecological, provincial, farm etc. Apart from this variety in the names their single meaning is obvious. They are unified by the area in which they develop – rural regions. They offer opportunities for rest and recovering in environment which is absolutely opposite to the one in their urban and industrial centers. Population prefers most the development of tourism in the territory of rural regions for diversification of economic activities. In most cases the right definition of rural regions defines their opportunity to develop alternative tourism on their territory. The report shows the evolution of understandings for rural regions in EU and in Bulgaria. It emphasizes some differences which have an effect on the opportunities for development of alternative tourism.
