Abstract

Starting from the consideration that orders for war material are an important meeting point for defensive strategies, politics, economy and finance, this work analyses the example of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany from the Congress of Vienna to 1848. Thanks to extensive and until now unexplored archive material, the study reconstructs the fundamental elements of the supply system and shows how this was conditioned by the lack of interest in defence arsenals, by the standard pattern of military expenditure and by the policy of economic liberalism. This study underlines how the choices, restrictions and contradictions which shaped this supply system also reveal the links that existed between politicians, military authorities and merchants.
