Les troupes coloniales aux Antilles sous l’Ancien Régime1

Abstract

When Louis XIV decided ton run directly the french West Indiens, he had to install permanent garrisons. But ministerial rivalries in Versailles obliged the Secretary of State for the Navy to raise his own troops to defend the Colonies. Officers were born in the West Indies, whereas soldiers were drafetd in the West of the Kingdom. After a try to reform the system in 1749, the desastrous Seven Years’s war compelled the Secretary of State for War to deal entirely with the Colonies. After a time of hesitation, the Navy recovered a full militray responsibility, but through the Army’s standards, by creating colonial regiments. During the War of American Independence, huge reinforcements were sent from France to the Colonies, which became bases for combined operations. The beginning of the French Revolution shattered the defence system of the colonies.
