Abstract

Under Louis XIV, the beneficial system of the Bayeux diocese came of age and ran fairly smoothly in spite of occasional conflicts centering on a limited number of benefices. Under the leadership of François de Nesmond (1662-1715), a reformist bishop whose positions were influenced by the council of Trent, the Bayeux diocese went through a period of religious revival, characterized by an ambitious training policy addressed to secular members. By the 1680’s, François de Nesmond could rely on a clergy that was not only trained and skilled but also increasingly numerous, as recruiting was picking up. Most priests’ ecclesiastic careers revolved around a single benefice, which was usually a cure. Family connections and clientelism account for many beneficial promotions, making this an Old Regime system based on collusion and privileges.
