Abstract

Arising from J. A. Scholl, A. L. Koh, & J. A. Dionne Nature 483, 421–427 ()(2012)10.1038/nature10904 The size-dependent properties of a nanoscale object can be studied in two ways. In the top-down approach the nanoscale object is made smaller and smaller. In the bottom–up approach one starts from the smallest possible size—sometimes an atom. Scholl et al.1 studied the electronic properties of silver particles using the top–down approach1. However, experimental2,3,4 and theoretical2,5,6,7,8 results are available from several bottom–up approaches and these results do not support the results of ref. 1.
